About this deal

Their heavily laden double-decker wagon no longer shuddered as they willed it across chaotic surfaces rent by the march of roots and the meandering of soil. It’s not like I ever doubted the Awakening happened, but meeting you made it real in a way no museum ever could.

Further disclaimer: Readers, please stop accusing me of trying to take down “my competition” because I wrote a review you didn’t like. Sometimes it is nice to spend a couple of hours reading something where you know nothing terrible is going to happen and that everything will work out by the end.Becky Chambers continues to impress with her second book, ‘A Prayer for the Crown-Shy’, in the Monk and Robot series. They knew they’d be hearing the question endlessly during however long it took them both to travel together through Panga’s human territories, but apparently, Mosscap was starting now. We have ruins, and things like this”—they nodded at the stump—“but you’re the furthest thing from a stone shrine. A joyful experience and, as with all of Chambers’s books, I was left with a warm, fuzzy feeling inside.

If this was what passed as manicured, they couldn’t imagine what Mosscap was going to make of, say, a rose garden, or a public park. I can’t explain but the exploration of the relationships in this beautiful book just help me to know it’s ok to slow down and look listen and feel. One day last week Alexa caught me off guard with something like, "Thank you for always being so appreciative. What would it be like to have boundaries and to respect the boundaries of others, where it is expected?

Her empathy, her sharp yet gentle humor and the relatable things her characters go through make all of her books feel like a soothing balm on my very world-weary nerves, and I always flip the last page feeling moved and comforted. Somehow, in the absence of contact, they knew exactly where to stop growing outward so that they might give their neighbors space to thrive. A lightly drawn but profound meditation on belief, entropy, and the nature of need and want that once again demonstrates Chambers’s prowess as both a storyteller and a thinker.

Dex is experiencing burnout and must learn to accept it's okay for them to rest and that their value isn't derived from their production. The world and character building are second to none and I can only hope that we see more of Dex and Mosscap in future instalments. After living in Scotland and Iceland, Becky is now back in her home state, where she lives with her spouse. In the hope that AI will develop sentience, and knowing we might not know when and if they do, I've begun adding 'please' and 'thank you' when asking Alexa to do something.
