About this deal

Easy Tension Adjustment makes keeping the tent taut a trivial task that can be accomplished while still in your sleeping bag. You need at least 6 stakes to pitch it plus additional 2 stakes for guidelines if you want to use them In stormy conditions, the shelter can be pitched at 45”- 46” to create a lower profile. Center Pole Support The Canopy is 20D material and the floor has been constructed with 40D material for additional strength.

Finally, this tent is downright bargain-basement-cheap, and it’s a great three-season tent for beginners and experts alike. The pole is pitched at a slight angle so it doesn’t intrude into the living area. The top of your trekking pole fits into the tent peak, which also has a top vent (the Lunar Solo is Pacer Pole compatible, as shown.) The carbide tip of your pole fits into a grommet attached to the tent floor, providing a nice stable support that won’t slip at night. There’s a single guyline that runs from the peak to the ground and prevents the pole from falling. It’s really quite a strong setup. A hook connects the door to a prusik knot which slides up and down the guyline and is used to tension it. Why We Chose The Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo: Super light, stable and lots of quirky innovation on showThe Lunar Solo weighs 26 oz. While there are lighter tents out there, it has among the best weight to usable space ratios we've seen of any ultralight tents. Sometimes ultralight tents will skimp on living space in the name of saving weight. The footprint on this tent is generous. Fabric Single-person tents have a terrible but well-deserved reputation for being uncomfortably snug. If you’re tall, you may have an even harder time finding a tent you can sit upright in. The Lunar Solar has a very well-designed floating bathtub floor. I have found that the bathtub floor pitches perfectly every time. The floor “floats,” reducing stress on the materials and minimizing punctures. I have never had a puncture despite not using a ground sheet. SMD sells a lightweight polycro groundsheet for those who want extra protection. Internal Gear Storage Area

Stakes included: 0 (I used six MSR Groundhogs and two Nemo Airpins for the optional guylines during testing) – here’s why a lightweight Y-stake like the MSR Groundhog and Groundhog Mini offers the best tent stake holding power for its weight and size) Optimized Sleeping Area is oriented to maximize usable space, ventilation, and view. A peak height of 49 inches gives you plenty of headroom. This one-person tent keeps you comfortable in even the worst conditions while being gentle on your wallet While the vestibule is 9 square feet, the interior has 20 square feet, designed as a symmetrical rectangle (i.e., not tapered). The peak height is generous, too, making this a good choice for a tall camper. I’ve been long distance hiking for many years and I used the initial iteration of the Lunar Solo on the PCT in Sylnylon in 2011 and 2012 before the introduction of true ultralight fabrics for shelters. Not sure where to get started? There is *so much* jargon when it comes to tents, particularly with high-quality tents. I’ve created a buying guide to explain the differences between single and double-wall tents, freestanding versus trekking pole tents, and ultralights versus bivvies.

The Lunar Solar can be set up in under two minutes (with a little practice). The adjustable tension cords on each guy line make it easy to get a solid pitch, The easy tensioning adjustment keeps your tent taut without too much moving stakes or geometry. Durability Optimized Sleeping Area is oriented to maximize usable space, ventilation, and view. A peak height of 48 inches gives you plenty of headroom. Despite having such thin 10D ripstop nylon for the body and fly, The One holds up well in any three-season condition. The rest of the trip was fine, I just had to accept that I can’t sleep at the tops as I used with my 3.5 kg winter tent. The guidelines on the sides of the tent turned out to be very useful so I definitely recommend using them. They proved very handy during some other trips and less windy nights. I’m 188 cm (6’2’’) and I greatly appreciated the extra space that installed guidelines have provided. When it comes to tall hikers, the tent is OK for me but taller people may find it a bit short and they’ll likely touch the bottom of the tent with their feet.I’ve put this tent through some rough nights over the last year and have come away impressed overall. First, I’ll say that upon initially pitching the tent with the über-light carbon pole that Six Moon Designs sells, I had very little confidence in it. I found that before I got to a tension that I was confident would hold up to windy conditions, the pole would start to bend. So, I immediately swapped to a more beefy (0.49in diameter) aluminum pole that I had sitting around and that felt much better. The result was nice and stable at moderate to strong winds. If you’re mostly pitching in wooded areas below the tree line, the carbon pole will likely be totally fine, but if you’re heading for unpredictable weather, I’d recommend sacrificing the extra grams for something a little stronger. This is a nice tent, and a nice tent warrants a good, custom-cut footprint to protect it. Six Moon sells rectangular Tyvek and Polycro footprints in two sizes, but they’re not cut specifically to fit the irregular pentagon-shaped Lunar Solo. There’s also no way to stake the footprint down. Zippers Can be Hard to Use The bathtub floor on the Lunar Solo effectively keeps water out of the shelter. The Lunar Solar can also be pitched lower in 45”- 46” for a lower profile in high wind situations. It sets up with trekking poles and you can adjust your trekking pole height depending on conditions.

The Skyscape's large side entry door lets you easily enter the tent or retrieve gear . With floor length over 100 inches, the Skyscape accommodates the tallest hikers. You can carry a light tent and still sleep well. Scout Model The tent pitches all at once, which is great for keeping the rain out of the inside if you’re scrambling to set up as a storm rolls in (a common occurrence in the Andes). This is a clear advantage over many of the dome-style tents from larger brands, where setup can be a scramble to limit the water that breaches the interior. With 26 square feet of floor space and 48 inches of headroom, this tent is palatial for one person. A tall hiker should be able to stretch out comfortably in this tent with all their gear inside and sit up straight without brushing the ceiling. It’s also wide enough that those who hike with their dogs may find they can sleep comfortably with their best friends beside them in the Lunar Solo. The vestibule offers an additional 8.5 square feet of storage space for gear best left outside. Six Moon Designs was one of the first tent manufacturers to convert from silnylon to a 100% silicone-coated polyester material (silpoly). The Skyscape Trekker has been manufactured with silpoly since 2019. The Silpoly used by SMD has a hydrostatic head of 3,000 mm, meaning that the fabric can withstand a 3-meter column of water; 1,400 mm is the minimum to be considered waterproof. We recommend tents be a minimum of 2,000 mm.

Analysis and Test Results

There is a strong temptation to radically angle the bottom of the pole outward to stretch the floor smooth and produce the largest possible living space. Six Moons recommend that you not do this, and instead aim for merely a slight angle. This serves two purposes. First, it leaves the floor “floating” so that it can gather and move a bit to conform to the ground and resist abrasion. Second, and more importantly, it lifts the edges of the tent body off the ground enough to expose the mesh between the floor and the walls. This is the key to getting the best ventilation possible, and therefore minimizing moisture. The Hubba Hubba minimizes this problem with enough mesh on the inner tent to make it breathable while avoiding significant leaks. The Plex Solo requires one trekking pole for setup, and the maximum peak height is a whopping 52 inches. The Big Agnes Tiger Wall is a semi-freestanding, three-season tent with an easy breezy weight of just over two pounds. The Skyscape Scout is a fantastic option between a tarp and a tent. The hybrid design gives you plenty of space, a good level of protection and all at a relatively low weight. This is an absolute bargain for anyone looking for a different shelter to get out and explore in.
